Which children need an echocardiogram?

1. If the child’s fingers, lips, or tongue turn blue.

2. If a heart murmur is detected with a stethoscope.

3. If the child fails to gain weight for unknown reasons.

At-risk children include:
a) All syndromic babies—Down syndrome, Turner syndrome, etc.
b) All children of diabetic mothers.
c) Babies born with congenital defects such as cleft lip, cleft palate, or extra fingers/toes.
d) If the mother has a history of SLE, infertility, high blood pressure, or hormone treatment.
e) Babies born at 31 weeks of gestation or earlier, or weighing less than 1.5 kg.
f) If the child has a sibling with a congenital heart disease.

Children who require immediate medical attention:

1. Reduced activity and irritable mood.

2. Change in skin color.

3. Rapid breathing.

4. Breathing with a whistling or wheezing sound.

5. Difficulty breathing.

6. Dark discoloration around the lips.

7. Intermittent breathing pauses.

8. Abnormally pale or purple mottled skin.

9. Drinking less than half the normal amount of fluids.

10. Vomiting.

11. Blood in stool.
