What is Hematology?

Hematology is the study of blood and related diseases. Platelets are one of the main cellular components of blood and are small nucleated cells produced from megakaryocytes in the bone marrow. Blood is the only tissue that flows throughout your body. This red fluid carries oxygen and nutrients to all parts of the body and removes waste products through your lungs, kidneys, and liver. It is an essential part of your immune system, helps maintain fluid and temperature balance, acts as a hydraulic fluid for specific functions, and serves as a highway for hormonal messages.

Hematology is the study of blood in health and disease. Hematology tests can be used to indicate, diagnose, and evaluate various conditions, including infections, inflammation, and anemia. Hemoglobin (Hgb) is the oxygen-carrying protein in red blood cells. Its level directly reflects the amount of oxygen in the blood.
