Cases in which a CT scan is performed:

  • Diagnosis of cancer or tumors.
  • Diagnosis of brain diseases or detecting if there is any brain hemorrhage.
  • To identify any heart disease or blockage in blood flow.
  • Diagnosis of lung diseases.
  • Diagnosis of bone fractures or other bone-related problems.
  • Detection of kidney or urinary tract diseases or stones.
  • Diagnosis of diseases in the gallbladder, liver, or pancreas. CT scans can also be used as a guide during biopsy procedures.
  • CT scans are done to determine the extent of cancer spread in cancer patients.

Additionally, patients who have pacemakers, valves, or similar devices cannot undergo MRI scans; therefore, CT scans are required. It is not a routine test and should never be done without a doctor’s recommendation. Since CT scans involve exposure to a high amount of kilovolt radiation, they are not advisable for children. They should never be done during pregnancy, as it may harm the fetus. CT scans are generally considered safe with negligible harmful side effects.
